These animals were thought to be stubborn though in comparison with horses, these animals are more unflappable and careful creatures. The main characteristic features of the animals are their long ears. The hooves of the animal are smaller and rounder than in horses and the pastern is more erect.

These animals are known in a variety of sizes: the Miniature Mediterranean, the Mammoth Jackstock and the rare French Poitou breed. The latter variety is recognized by a large head and ears and extremely thick and curly black coat.
